Acid Rain4 essays
Acid Rain4 essays The damaging effects of acid rain on society is becoming overwhelmed with great amounts of pollution from cars, factories and an large amounts of garbage. The immense amounts of sulphur dioxide put into the air causes high levels of acid in the atmosphere. When this sulphuric acid is absorbed into moisture in the air, then rain can be harmful to the environment. Acid rain is destroying lots of things in our environment. It is hurting lakes, air and thew rest of our ecosystem. Acid rain is killing lakes and decreasing the number of animals in these lakes. Acid rain greatly lowers the amounts of pH in the water. Each decade the pH levels of lakes around Ontario have become ten times more acidic. The high acid levels contained in lakes also causes a decrease in the number of fish living in these lakes. Also the high amounts of acid in the water can lead to fish being deformed. They have messed up and out of shape backbones, flattened heads and strangely curved tails. When there gets to be a lot of acid in the water, then there is barely anything left besides rock bass, pumpkinseed and lake herring. As with sulphur dioxide in rain, mercury is also discharged into the water. There is a direct connection between the mercury rich lakes as there is with those with high acidic levels. This metal becomes concentrated in the blood and tissues of fish. Acid rain causes traumatic effects in natural lakes and rivers. Acid rain causes air quality to deteriorate. As in water, acid rain causes the pH levels in the air to decrease. The sulphur dioxide, which diffuses into the air, mixes with moisture causing the pH levels to drop from the normal level. Again, the normal level is somewhere around seven, yet in some acidic air masses the levels can be as low as three. These lowered pH levels form a photochemical smog in the atmosphere. In the air Anitrogen oxides react with ozone and some hydrocarbons in the presence of sunlight to ...

How to Style Names of Food
How to Style Names of Food How to Style Names of Food How to Style Names of Food By Mark Nichol When it comes to names of comestibles and beverages, whether to capitalize proper names that are part of their names can give one indigestion. Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s Collegiate Dictionary tends to uppercase such terms though it often (but not always) advises that capitalization is not necessary but The Chicago Manual of Style recommends lowercase forms. The Associated Press Style Book, the guide of record for newspapers and many magazines, tends to vary more arbitrarily in its guidelines. Hereââ¬â¢s some food for thought: Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s capitalizes names of cheeses derived from geographical locations Brie, Cheddar, Stilton, Swiss but they can safely be lowercased without confusion, which is what The Chicago Manual of Style recommends. Several names for types of meat frankfurter, hamburger, and wiener derive from place names, but notice that theyââ¬â¢re all lowercase. France, once the epicurean center of the world, has inspired much nomenclature about food French bean and French bread, just to name two but the adjective in ââ¬Å"french friesâ⬠refers to the type of cut, so itââ¬â¢s generally not capitalized. Scotch is not necessarily capitalized when it refers to whiskey, but it is uppercased in ââ¬Å"Scotch brothâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Scotch egg.â⬠Bourbon is not capitalized. Names of cocktails are often uppercased ââ¬Å"Bloody Mary,â⬠ââ¬Å"Harvey Wallbangerâ⬠especially, as with these examples, if theyââ¬â¢re named after people (but note margarita). But alcoholic drinks named after locations (daiquiri, manhattan) arenââ¬â¢t capitalized, except for ââ¬Å"Irish coffee.â⬠One particularly difficult area is names of foods from other countries. Because the names are transliterated and may come to English through more than one middleman language, more than one spelling may enter the language. When in doubt, remain loyal to one style guide or a periodical about cooking. If a term has not yet been included or mentioned, search for it online with various spellings and see how authoritative Web sites treat it. What about menu items? On an actual restaurant menu, itââ¬â¢s acceptable to capitalize names of dishes, because they are the equivalent of headings on that type of document, but names of ingredients in a descriptive passage below the item name should not be capitalized unless they already deserve that distinction. However, in text, words used to describe something served at a restaurant should be lowercase unless theyââ¬â¢re place names (ââ¬Å"Peking duckâ⬠), brand names (ââ¬Å"chicken-ââ¬â¢nââ¬â¢-Cheetos), or house concoctions (ââ¬Å"Sous-Chef Sammyââ¬â¢s Lava Soupâ⬠). Music Appreciation Critique #2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Music Appreciation Critique #2 - Essay Example The nineteenth century focused more on update in the new century where they wanted music to be changed while focusing on the modern styles and forgetting the old styles of music. This is the point where classical music was considered to be an all time favorite in music history. One particular effective strategy, for example, was continually conjuring up fears about new forms of popular music, above all the amorphous category of jazz. In one critique of popular music, jazz music was highly appreciated (Alexander, 2009). Amadeus Mozart is one of the greatest classical musicians who ever lived. His music happens to be among the finest forms of music to date. Classical music is one of the best types of music that nature has ever had and people have decided to appreciate it in all the possible acts. One of the aims of classical music is to promote the culture of a certain people who live within their surroundings. According to Webster, classical music can be categorized according to the impacts that it makes on the lives of their listeners. Transformation n the world of music can be defined as a process, act or instance of which a genre of music is being played (Goulding, 1995). This was a Latin word that was used in music which refers to the diatonic semitone of the Pythagorean scale. It was also a term that was used in the acapella type of music by Mozart in the 19th century. Instruction in music appreciation went on to build definitions of popular and classical music upon contemporary constructions of race, class and gender, both reflecting and enhancing common stereotypes and prejudices (Dearling) In treating race, class, gender as interrelated, the study on music critiques further expands upon early studies of cultural hierarchy that focused on socioeconomic class and builds upon the work the work of many musicologists that have explored the social construction of music through race and gender. This is a type of musical poem that is

Spiritual Needs Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Spiritual Needs - Essay Example Questionnaire has been developed as the tool for assessment; ten questions had been formulated in order to explore her spiritual need, to which she made sufficient and sensible answers. After the research process, her needs were defined and determined, in order to provide her with the best possible environment for her convalescence. Spiritual need assessment in nursing profession refers to the estimation of the religious and spiritual requirements of the according to the faith followed by the patient(s) under treatment, in order to provide them with spiritual relief and comforts along with counseling, medicines, therapy and other necessary healthcare essential for their convalescence and recovery from mental or physical illness. Cobb & Robshaw (1998: 7) are of the view that spiritual and emotional collapse look for spiritual care, so that the patients may choose to discuss their concerns provided they have been shown proper attention, respect and appreciation. Spiritual assessment to ol is not confined to the followers of one particular religious faith; on the contrary, the same could be applied to the individuals adhering to any belief system. The researches reveal that exploration of spiritual distress and anxiety the reason behind it could turn out to be supportive health care providers in understanding the problem of the patient. In addition, it can also become productive for ensuring the smooth progress of personal and spiritual growth essential in respect of paving the way towards the better care of the patient by the healthcare providers (Burkhardt & Nagai-Jacobson, 2002: 22). Consequently, spiritual need assessment provides a superior methodology for the elimination of emotional distress and emotional collapse from the mind of the patient. While elaborating the case under-analysis, the patient was admitted at the healthcare center because of her emotional trauma and her chronic asthma complaint. In the beginning, the patient remained reserved and silent, and did not share anything with the staff. Somehow, after nearly seven hours of her admittance, she looked quite moved because of the extreme compassion and care provided by the staff members. Since the patient appeared to be ready for sharing her life and faith she follows, it became quite easier for the staff to peep into her mind, and explore her personality. Thus, every thing, related to research went well, in the light of the questionnaire, developed for the same purpose, and there was no main hurdle in making assessment of her spiritual needs altogether. Actually I have already examined the flaws in the questionnaire while asking the answers of the questions from my family members in order to make it perfect. I would like to apply interview-schedule in future, as it is more comprehensive in understanding the motifs of the respondents with the help of gestures, body language, voice tone and face expressions. The patientââ¬â¢s non-compliance and fear of expressing her belief was the challenge for me during the research. Somehow, a friendly environment encouraged her to share her feelings with me. Since I am Protestant, so only lack of knowledge about only few things created hurdles for me, though my study of Catholic belief and interaction with my Catholic friends helped me out in development of research too. The patient informed me that she belonged to Catholic faith, and maintained deep love for and unflinching faith in Holy Jesus Christ. I came to know about the very fact that faith contained imperative significance for her, as it not only provided peace,

The Crucible Essay Example for Free
The Crucible Essay In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor shows his protagonist character by the respectable and honorable man he lives to be. In order to understand why John Proctor is the protagonist of the story, a definition of the word protagonist is indispensable. A protagonist is essentially the main character of a story, mostly known as the good character. The author spends most of his time on him, and usually the character changes or evolves during the course of the novel. The protagonist is frequently the hero of the novel and rivals with the minor ambitious character also known as the antagonist. With many complex characteristics, he is the center of the plot. Proctor has failed in his marriage, been accused of witchery, and concludes his life with forgiveness. Proctor exemplifies true heroism in his acts of clamorous times. As Proctorââ¬â¢s truths of adultery are revealed, he settles these rumors with claiming that it is truthful. John Proctor is most likely the true protagonist. In the Crucible, Abigail Williams is portrayed as the antagonist of the allegory. Proctor cheats on his wife, Elizabeth, with Abigail while Elizabeth is ill. The story proceeds with Abigail becoming jealous and desiring John for herself. John shows that he regrets his affair by stating to Abigail, I will cut my arms off before I ever reach for you again. The focus of this sequence of events is how John deals with this situation. The Crucible literally means a hard test. His test is to overcome his troubles in his marriage and society. Society at this time is accusing its people of witchery. John works through his marriage problems and stumbles upon false accusations. As Abigail creates chaos throughout the town, the idea of witches has spread too. Proctor is accused of being a witch. He was chosen to be accused by the author because he is the protagonist. The focus is mainly on his life and his family. He chooses the right thing as he goes through the trials. He admits to his adultery with Abigail to prove that she lies. Proctor realizes what he has to do to save his wife. He is a hero by admitting his wrong doings and confessing his sorrow for acting upon them. Proctor learns to forgive through these trials. John knows how to represent his beliefs and stand up for his rights through forgiveness. After he admits to his sin, he is told to write on the church door for what he did. He refuses to after already admitting his actions. Proctor did not want to put his family to shame even more. I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is fraud. Im not the man (Act 4, pg.109) He knows that God knows and forgives but he shall not exploit it for others to judge and assume. Proctor concludes his life being content with the final decision he has made. He shows that he is a hero to his family and neighbors. John Proctor shows many characteristics of a protagonist. He is a hero to many as he risks his life because he knows he believes in God. The story focuses on his marriage and the aftermath of the direction of his wrong doings. Often the novel will focus mainly on the protagonistââ¬â¢s personal situation. Proctor is the main character as Abigail Williams serves as antagonists throughout the story. She fights to break down Proctor and make him love her. Proctor prevails by doing the morally correct action by confessing and sticking to his beliefs. John Proctor displays qualities of a heroic protagonist.

Power of Nuclear Energy Essay -- Nuclear Reactor Breeders
Abstract The use of nuclear energy is a big topic for debate. Many countries have fully embraced it while others, such as the U. S., havenââ¬â¢t. Nuclear energy is feared for its danger and scorned because of its wastes. On the other hand, nuclear energy does have some pros like cheaper cost of energy and environmentally safe. Reactor breeders show great promise in nuclear waste, but are it enough to convince the nation? Introduction Nuclear knowledge has existed for a long time. Nuclear Engineering U.S. Department of Energy relates, ââ¬â¢By 1900, the physicists knew the atom contains large quantities of energyââ¬â" (par 11). Many others formed good theories, such as Ernest Rutherford and Einsteinââ¬â¢s contribution with his equation E=mc^2. In 1934 a physicist known as Enrico Fermi conducted an experiment that resulted in the splitting of atoms. In 1938 two scientists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman, conducted an experiment that was the beginning of a new realization in the nuclear world. Nuclear Engineering U.S. Department of Energy describes, ââ¬â¢Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman fired neutrons from a source containing the elements radium and beryllium into uranium (atomic number 92)ââ¬â" (par 15). The experiment resulted in a new and unexpected out come. The elements that were naturally produced during such experiments weighed only a little less than uranium; whereas, this time the elements were ar ound half as light. They shared their information with Lise Meitner who studied the out come with Neils Bohr and her nephew Otto R. Frisch. The three of them concluded that the light weighted elements were the results of The Power of Nuclear Energy 3 the uranium splitting also known as fission. Lise Meitner proved this theory using Einsteinââ¬â¢s theory. Bo... ...ear energy has many faults, but along with it nuclear energy has many advantages. People need to put aside the fears of nuclear plant that have grown out of tragedies and scares such as Three Miles Island and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion. The Chernobyl has been the only plant that has caused destruction out of over six decades of nuclear power. The nuclear waste can be reused to form more energy using breeder reactors solving most of the waste problem. The costs of nuclear energy are lower than the costs for most other forms of energy. Nuclear energy is constant and not seasonal like solar or wind energy. It is environmentally safe for animals and people living near by. Nuclear energy does not contribute to nuclear energy like coal produced energy. It would be a smart move for our country to move in the direction towards a more nuclear powered nation.

Bluefield health plan Essay
Arc Electric employees were opting for their health insurance plan. Arc Electric had expanded their workforce due to which more employees were enrolling for Bluefieldââ¬â¢s health insurance plan for the benefits. But when Bluefield released that the utilization of their physician services had tremendously increased in the last 6 months because of which their profits were being affected, they had to find out the cause for this. Soon they realized that the main cause for the increase in the utilization of their physician services was the increase in the number of new employees who were opting for the health insurance plan. Exhibit 1 clearly shows that the number of Arc Electric employees using Bluefieldââ¬â¢s Health insurance plan has increased from 3912 in July, 2006 to 4137 in August, 2006. Thus, in only one month the increase has been of 225 people, which is comparatively quite high. Also, in 2006, the total cost incurred by Arc Electric for inpatient and outpatient hospital services were 203425 and 182440 in July and 212250 and 180700 in August, and for surgical services were 101250 and 103400 in July and August. Thus, the total cost incurred for hospital services and surgical services were 487115 and 496350 in July and August. While on the other hand the total cost incurred by Arc Electric for visits to physicianââ¬â¢s office was only 337900 and 391450 in July and August. Therefore we can see that the difference is almost of 147215 and 104900 in July and August. As Bluefieldââ¬â¢s contract with Arc Electric was about to expire the next month, they had to renegotiate the terms in their contract with Arc Electric and request for an increase in their premium rate in order to maintain their profit. They had realized that the main reason for their erosion of profits was the increasing number of Arc Electric employees who had opted for their health insurance plan. But, Bluefield were also aware of the fact that during renegotiations if they tried to increase the fixed premium which they charged every employee of Arc Electric per month, then they may refuse to do anymore business with them and sign a contract with some other health insurance company. This, Bluefield was not ready to risk. Thus, Bluefield wanted the staff members and directors to devise a renegotiating strategy which they could present before Arc Electric and maintain their contract with them while at the same time see to it that their profitability remains at par. After much consideration and results from various studies, including Exhibit 1, the employees of Bluefield realized that simply by increasing their copayment charges they will not be able to bring about a decrease in the number of physician visits since people do not actually like to visit the physicians but rather do it in order to remain healthy and fit. The only way they can reduce their costs is by paying less to their health care providers, like the physicians. Thus, they first needed to negotiate with the physicians and ask them to decrease the costs of services supplied by them. If they simply asked the physicians to lower their cost of service by around 10% or 25% they might do it with the fear that they may loose all of their patients and also be left out of Bluefieldââ¬â¢s health insurance plan. But this may have certain negative effects as in return of a lower fee per visit the physicians may also lessen the quality of care that they give to their clients. This is the reason why Bluefield required a further analysis of physicians visit. Out of the $250 fixed premium that Bluefield charged each employee of Arc Electric every month, the total premium revenue was portioned out as 55% for the hospital and surgical services and 30% for the physician visits. Thus while $137. 5 went for the hospital and surgical services only $75 went in for the physician visits. Thus for every premium collected, the profitability of hospital and surgical services was almost $62. 5 more than the profitability of the physician services. Thus, when compared to physicianââ¬â¢s services, hospital and surgical services have a profitability of almost 45% more than the former.
